It’s Time to Update Our Electoral Structures: A Vision for True Representation

In the days of horse-drawn carriages and handwritten letters, it made sense to send an elected representative to Parliament to advocate for the needs of their community. Back then, traveling to Ottawa was a logistical challenge, and this system provided a practical and realistic way to ensure voices from across the country were heard.

Fast forward to today: technology has transformed how we communicate, transact, and connect. Yet, our political systems remain stuck in a bygone era, as outdated as using a rotary phone to Google a recipe.

A Broken System

Since the early 1800’s, Canada’s population has skyrocketed from 1.8 million to over 40 million, and the challenges communities face have grown exponentially more complex. Asking a single Member of Parliament (MP) to truly represent the nuanced needs of their constituents is not only unrealistic but fundamentally flawed.

Our current system allows 338 MPs to decide for 40 million people—a representation rate of just 0.00000845%. Even worse, there’s virtually no accountability for those making these decisions.

Why do we wait four years or more to elect someone who might—if they win and if they align with our ideals—represent us. Even when our preferred candidate is elected, they are often forced to toe the party line, voting as instructed by party leaders rather than on behalf of their constituents.

This is not a government by the people; it’s a government by party elites, with local issues diluted into talking points that suit the interests of a select few. The legislative process compounds this disconnect, creating endless bureaucratic hurdles that stymie any meaningful progress. Can we really call this a system that listens to the people? It’s time to take back our authority and redefine representation.

Time for a New Model

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” – Unknown

Today, we have the tools to do just that. Encryption and blockchain technology have already revolutionized how we manage money through cryptocurrencies, offering unprecedented levels of security, transparency, and efficiency. If this technology works for our finances, why not use it to empower our democracy?

Imagine a system where every individual has a secure, private, and direct vote on the issues that matter most. Through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), we could eliminate the need for a centralized political structure altogether. Decisions about our resources, policies, and priorities could be made by all Canadians, not just a select few.

Putting Power Back in the Hands of the People

In this vision of governance, you could vote directly on issues like homelessness, healthcare, education, and natural resource management. Instead of funding wars abroad that perpetuate cycles of suffering, you could choose to invest in solutions that make a difference here at home (Side note – If we stop funding wars, they just might end).

By leveraging technology, we could create a system where accountability isn’t optional—it’s built into the very fabric of governance.

Building a Better Future

This isn’t just about improving governance—it’s about creating a system that genuinely reflects the will of the people. By embracing modern technology, we can build a democracy that is transparent, inclusive, and adaptable to the needs of every Canadian.

The question is: Why are we waiting? The tools are here. The demand for change is growing. It’s time to stop relying on an antiquated system that has failed us and start building a future where every voice truly matters.
